A young orthopedic surgeon in Kerala died by suicide on Thursday, reportedly after being harassed by many on social media who accused him of the death of a seven-year-old boy during surgery on September 23.
Kilikollur police in Kollam district have filed an unnatural death case after 35-year-old Dr. Anoop Krishna, who runs the Anoop Ortho Care hospital, was found dead at his home in Kadappakada. Moments before his death, he had reportedly scrawled the word “sorry” on the bathroom walls.
A senior police officer investigating the death said it is too early to say whether the doctor’s suicide has any connection to the death of a child during surgery a week ago. He said police would investigate whether the doctor was harassed or received online / offline threats.
On September 23, a seven-year-old girl, admitted to Dr. Anoop’s hospital, had suffered cardiac arrest during a knee operation directed by Dr. Anoop himself. Although they took her to another hospital, she passed away. The family of the deceased along with the locals organized protests in front of the hospital, holding Dr. Anoop responsible. They also filed a medical malpractice case at the Kollam East Police Station. The investigation, led by Deputy Commissioner A Pradeep Kumar, was underway when Dr. Anoop took his own life.
Kumar, when asked about the research, said: “The research is in an early stage. There are several procedures involved and we cannot jump to conclusions. The child’s post-mortem report and other laboratory reports are awaited. “
“We have been in contact with the doctor’s office the entire time and had even asked him to contact us (if he faced threats). He personally didn’t tell me anything about it. “
Meanwhile, several doctors came to light in support of Dr. Anoop, censoring the “trial by social networks and online portals.”
Dr Sulphi Noohu, an otolaryngology consultant and vice president of the Kerala chapter of the Indian Medical Association (IMA), wrote on Facebook that Dr Anoop had agreed to the boy’s surgery after several doctors refused to do so, perhaps citing the risks of Covid-19.
“Unfortunately, we lost the child. And an army of soldiers arrives ready for a trial on social media. They wrote the verdict that the doctor is guilty. For a few quick bucks, they even wrote that he killed her. They spread negative news because of the popularity they get through it. For some change of friend, they get on YouTube. This was the sole objective of the online portals that conducted the social media test, ”he wrote.
But Kerala lost a great doctor. Anoop’s family lost a loving member, her son a father, her wife a loving husband, and, for friends, an active companion. But those who took the social media test missed nothing. This should not be repeated. We cannot allow this. There must be action against those who made the trial of the media. We need a change in cyber laws. There may be freedom of expression, but the murder of characters should not be allowed. “
InfoClinic’s Dr. Jinesh PS wrote on Facebook that doctors don’t have a “magic” medicine that can cure everyone. They are also human, aided by the facilities they have, the knowledge they gained, and the advancement of science by participating in a profession, he said.
Negligence and complications are two terms with different meanings. During treatment, complications cannot be avoided. In almost all types of surgeries where there is anesthesia, there are complications. We can only take care to avoid such complications. If they do occur, we can only provide the correct treatment. Deaths can occur due to complications. Here, without confirming whether it was negligence or complications, cries of murder are raised. I register my anger and disappointment. This suicide is a wound to the heart of every healthcare worker and the silence of society towards him, ”Dr. Jinesh wrote.
