Calcutta:
A BJP leader, who had said he would hug West Bengal Chief Minister Mamata Banerjee if he contracted COVID-19, tested positive for the virus.
“Covid Positive,” Anupam Hazra, West Bengal’s new BJP National Secretary, posted on his Facebook page today. Hazra has been admitted to a private hospital in Kolkata, health officials said according to the PTI news agency.
He had complained of discomfort and was tested for coronavirus, authorities said.
A police report was filed against Hazra earlier this week after her controversial “Covid hug” statement.
On Sunday Anupam Hazra, a former Trinamool MP from Bolpur Bengal, who joined the BJP in January 2019, was quoted as saying: “If I ever come across Covid positive, I will go to Chief Minister Mamata Banerjee and I will embrace. understand the pain of those who have suffered from the disease and lost loved ones during the pandemic. “
Harza made the comment a day after the BJP appointed him secretary on Saturday, replacing Rahul Sinha, who expressed anger that a loyal party worker had to give way to “accommodate” a renegade from Trinamool.
The Trinamool Congress Refugee Cell filed a complaint for derogatory comments against a woman and head of state. He requested action against Mr. Hazra for defaming a public figure, who is a woman, in violation of the Constitution and hurting the feelings of the complainants. The police report was filed at Siliguri Police Station in Darjeeling District.
BJP leaders in Bengal had distanced themselves from Hazra’s comment. “Those in positions of responsibility must be careful what they speak,” the newly appointed vice president of the BJP, Mukul Roy, had said.
West Bengal has more than 2.6 lakh of coronavirus cases with 5,017 deaths.
