Trinamool Congress MP Derek O’Brien, who was heading to Hathras from Uttar Pradesh today, where a 20-year-old girl was gang-raped and tortured about two weeks ago, was pushed to the ground in a clash with police when he and others Party leaders tried to enter the town where the victim lived.
In a 32-second video, a man in a white shirt and helmet can be seen grabbing TMC MP Pratima Mandal by the shoulders to prevent her from walking into the village. Derek O’Brien rushes to rescue her and the man pushes him to the ground.
Previously, TMC MPs Pratima Mandala and Kakoli Ghosh Dastidar and former MP Mamata Thakur could be seen urging policemen with folded hands to let them into the village. Derek O’Brien could be heard telling police, “Let the women go at least.” However, his path was blocked by the police.
While officials have denied mistreatment by MPs, TMC leaders are holding a sit-in about 1 km from the victim’s home. “The accusations are totally false. The policewomen asked (TMC leaders) to go back, as no one can enter the village. The 20-year-old who died Tuesday had suffered multiple fractures, paralysis and a severe spinal injury when she was assaulted by four men from the so-called upper castes of her village on September 14. The action against TMC leaders comes a day after Congressional leaders Rahul Gandhi and Priyanka Gandhi Vadra were briefly detained for violating the ban on large gatherings amid the novel coronavirus outbreak as they marched towards Hathras.
Yesterday, a case was brought against Rahul Gandhi and Priyanka Gandhi Vadra under the Epidemic Law, hours after the brief arrest. The two leaders had planned to meet with the 20-year-old woman’s family.
