A 14-year-old girl, belonging to the included castes, was found murdered today in Bhadohi, in eastern Uttar Pradesh. Police said he had been hit on the head with bricks. The death comes as the country recovers from the shock over the Hathras case: the brutal attack on a 20-year-old girl and the aftermath of her death, the cremation of her body at 2 am by the police while her family was locked. .
While the Hathras police were under scrutiny, their counterparts in Bhadohi said that investigations into the teenager’s death are underway.
The girl, police said, had not returned when she went to the field to relieve herself. Her brother found the body when he went looking for her, police said.
The police suspect that she had been raped.
“It could be a rape case because there seems to be no other reason to kill her. The girl was only 14 years old. She had no enmity with anyone. But this will be confirmed only when the autopsy report is available,” said Ram Badan. Singh, a local police officer.
It is not yet known who the attackers are, police said, adding that they are following all leads.
The teenager’s death comes two days after Hathras’s wife died in a Delhi hospital. His horrific injuries and the alleged multiple police slip-ups in the case have sparked outrage across the country.
The matter took a political turn today when state police detained Rahul Gandhi from Congress as he was on his way to Hathras to meet with the family. Rahul Gandhi alleged that he was thrown to the ground and loaded with lathi as he and Priyanka Gandhi marched down the road after Uttar Pradesh police stopped their convoy. They were later released and taken back to Delhi.
The party tweeted about the Bhadohi case under the hashtag #JusticeForIndiasDaughters, demanding the resignation of Chief Minister Yogi Adityanath.
“Is there no end to the cruelty that the BJP will allow? Just 25 miles from the prime minister’s constituency, another child has been brutalized. CM Ajay Bisht must resign,” his post read.
