MP ADG Purushottam Sharma, seen beating his wife in viral video, suspended | Madhya Pradesh News

Bhopal: The Madhya Pradesh government suspended Additional Director General (ADG) Purushottam Sharma from his duties with immediate effect after a video of him beating his wife went viral on social media on Monday.

Sharma was reportedly suspended after the State Department of the Interior deemed his clarification, about a video of him beating his wife, to be “unsatisfactory”.

In the video, Sharma is seen allegedly beating his wife in their living room, while two other people try to intervene and control the situation. The incident took place after Sharma’s wife allegedly found out about her alleged extramarital affair.

By defending himself and calling it a “family dispute”, Sharma accused his wife of harassing him and putting closed-circuit television cameras in their home.

“If I’m abusive, then she should have complained. This is a family feud, not a crime. I’m neither a violent person nor a criminal. It’s unfortunate that I have to go through this,” Sharma had said.

However, he said that she had once complained against him in 2008 in their marriage of 32 years.

“But the fact is that since 2008 he lives in my house, enjoys all the facilities and travels abroad with my expenses,” added Sharma.

Meanwhile, women’s rights activists have condemned the act.

MP State Women’s Commission spokeswoman Sangeeta Sharma said such an incident will not be tolerated by the Women’s Commission. If the officer’s wife files a complaint against her husband, the Commission will take action after it becomes aware.

“These incidents by senior officials do not send a good message to society,” he said.

The couple’s son, Parth, had sent the video of the incident to the interior minister, chief secretary and state director general, and had requested to file a complaint against the father.

Parth Gautam Sharma, son of DGP level officer Purushottam Sharma, is said to be also an IRS. He is a 2014 group officer of the Indian Revenue Service.

The video was uploaded by him to social networks.
