On Wednesday, the Defense Research and Development Organization (DRDO) successfully tested the BrahMos surface-to-surface cruise missile with an indigenous air frame and booster sector, along with other domestically manufactured subsystems. The supersonic missile is one of the main precision attack missiles used by all three forces, the Army, Navy and Air Force.
“BrahMos supersonic surface-to-surface cruise missile with indigenous fuselage and reinforcement section along with many other ‘Made in India’ subsystems was successfully flight tested for designated range” at 10.30am from integrated test range in Balasore in Odisha, the Defense Ministry said in a statement. “It is a more important step to improve indigenous content.”
The BrahMos land attack cruise missile (LACM) was sailing at a maximum speed of Mach 2.8. The missile weighs around 2.5 tons and has an attack range of approximately 300 km.
The test comes at a time when BrahMos has been deployed to Ladakh, as well as the eastern sector of Arunachal Pradesh, to deal with any threats in the current standoff with China.
Defense Minister Rajnath Singh tweeted to congratulate DRDO on “successful flight tests of the #BRAHMOS supersonic cruise missile with indigenous reinforcement and air frame for designated range.” This achievement, he said, “will give a great boost to India’s Atma Nirbhar Bharat engagement.”
