Facing national anger over the gang rape and killing of a woman in Uttar Pradesh’s Hathras and the way the police cremated her in the middle of the night against her family’s wishes, Chief Minister Yogi Adityanath spoke to the family tonight via video link. He spoke with the woman’s father and assured him that strict action will be taken against the four men who have been arrested.
“The Chief Minister has spoken with the father. His father … requested the harshest penalty against the accused. The Chief Minister assured him that the strictest measures would be taken against the accused and all possible help would be provided to the family.” . “The Additional Chief Secretary (Interior), Awanish Kumar Awasthi, said.
The woman’s father, speaking to the ANI news agency, said: “The Chief Minister has assured us that we will obtain justice. It is true that we were unable to see our daughter. We are hopeful that we will obtain justice.”
The woman’s family will receive 25 lakh rupees and a house along with a government job for one member, the state government said.
The prime minister has asked a task force to investigate the case and has ordered a fast-track court for the trial. The team has been asked to complete its investigation in one week.
Yogi Adityanath told reporters that Prime Minister Narendra Modi had spoken to him and called for the harshest punishment against the accused.
“Respected Prime Minister @narendramodi Ji has spoken out about the Hathras incident and said that strict action should be taken against the culprits,” the Chief Minister’s Office tweeted.
The 20-year-old woman was gang-raped and tortured on September 14 by four men from her village in Hathras, about 200 km from Delhi. The barbarous assault left her with multiple broken bones, paralyzed and struggling to breathe. Her tongue was cut out because she reportedly bit it when the men tried to strangle her. After fighting for her life for two weeks, she died yesterday in the Delhi hospital.
His family’s grief turned to endless horror when UP police took his body, took Hathras, and cremated him around 2.30am, with the family entrenched in their home. The family had begged that he be allowed to take the body home one last time and perform his last rites in the morning.
But all his pleas and attempts to get the body failed and the police went ahead with the cremation without his parents or siblings.
The act has sparked waves of shock and anger across the country, with angry posts from politicians, celebrities, activists, and several others.
The opposition parties attacked the government of Yogi Adityanath; Congress leader Priyanka Gandhi Vadra said he “had no moral right to continue.”
