Film director Anurag Kashyap was summoned by Mumbai police to appear at the Versova police station at 11 am Thursday in connection with the sexual assault case brought by an actress.

On September 23, the actress accused Kashyap of rape, outraging his modesty and unfair confinement in 2013. Seeking the help of Prime Minister Narendra Modi, she claimed that Kashyap had also behaved inappropriately with three other actors.

A FIR registered against Kashyap the same day that the actress and her lawyer approached the Versova police station. He was booked under Sections 376 (I) of the Indian Penal Code (rape), 354 (assault or use of criminal force on a woman with the intent to violate her modesty), 341 (undue restraint) and 342 (undue confinement) the official said, adding that more investigations are underway.

Kashyap, who has been outspoken against certain policies of the central government, issued a statement denying the allegations and called the actress’ claim an attempt to “silence him” for his outspoken opinions.

After the actress’s allegations, several actresses who had worked with Kashyap in the past came out in support of her, including her ex-wife Kalki.

On Sunday, the actress and her lawyer Nitin Satpute had visited the Versova police station to demand that the complaint be investigated as a matter of priority. She had also threatened to go on a hunger strike unless the police soon arrested Kashyap. On Monday, the actress met with the head of the Republican Party of India, Ramdas Athawale. The Union Minister of State for Social Justice and Empowerment later announced that the RPI would launch an agitation if Kashyap was not arrested within a week.
