Tejasvi Surya, the new head of the BJP youth wing, has drawn criticism for his comment that Bengaluru has become the “epicenter of terrorist activities.” While his tweet on the matter has sparked attacks on social media, with many pointing out that Karnataka is ruled by the BJP, the opposition Congress has said that the BJP should fire the new youth leader.
Deputy DK Shivakumar, who has been solving problems for a long time and now heads the party’s state unit, said: “The BJP should fire him. He is killing Bengaluru. It is a shame or the BJP.”
Chief Minister BS Yeddyurappa has expressed his support for the young MP. “‘I’ve been asking the prime minister for the NIA here for some years now. I congratulate the prime minister and the interior minister for agreeing,” he said. When asked if he supports Mr. Surya’s statement, Mr. Yeddiyurappa said: “He simply said in this regard that terrorist activities in Bangalore are increasing today.”
In an interaction with the media yesterday, the first since he was appointed to the new position, Tejasvi Surya said: “In recent years, Bengaluru, India’s Silicon Valley, has become the epicenter of terrorist activities. It has been proven through many arrests and busted terrorist sleeper cells by the investigative agency in the city. “
Among the evidence, the MP cited recent mob attacks in the KJ Halli and DJ Halli areas of the city.
“It is of great concern that NIA investigations into the mob violence of DJ Halli and KG Halli in August have indicated that many terrorist organizations are using Bengaluru as their incubation center to carry out activities against India.” He said.
In August, three people were shot to death by police and 60 policemen were injured during clashes in the DJ Halli and KG Halli areas in eastern Bangalore. The violence had started over an offensive Facebook post, allegedly by a relative of an MLA in Congress.
The MP, who represents Bengaluru South in Lok Sabha, said he asked the Union Interior Minister Amit Shah to open a National Investigation cell in the city.
“For a long time there was a demand that there should be a full-blown NIA office in Karnataka,” he said, noting that the central agency is currently based in Hyderabad.
Amit Shah, he said, has assured him “that it will be established soon.”
