Bangalore:

In the midst of a brief uproar, the motion of no confidence filed by the opposition Congress against the BJP government in Karnataka, led by Chief Minister BS Yediyurappa, was defeated by voice vote on Saturday night.

In the midst of a brief uproar, the motion of no confidence filed by the opposition Congress against the BJP government in Karnataka, led by Chief Minister BS Yediyurappa, was defeated by voice vote on Saturday night.

“The motion is in favor of Nos. The motion is rejected by voice vote,” President Kageri said at the end of the current session of the Karnataka Assembly.

In launching the debate on the motion of no confidence, Congress veteran Siddaramaiah launched a scathing attack on the BJP government, more specifically on the family of Chief Minister BS Yediyurappa.

Claiming that the BJP government has lost the confidence of the people to continue in power, Siddaramaiah said that the BJP never had a mandate to govern the state.

“He didn’t have enough numbers (in the assembly) but he came up with Operation Lotus.

Yediyurappa is the father of Operation Lotus (a term used by the opposition to describe movements to attract legislators to the BJP) in the country, “said K Siddaramaiah when starting the debate on the motion of no confidence.

Siddaramaiah was referring to the collapse of the Congress-JDS coalition government in July last year when some congressional and JDS legislators resigned from the assembly and later joined the BJP.

Claiming that the government did not provide relief to people affected by the floods in 2019, Siddaramaiah said the government had requested relief of approximately Rs 35 billion from the Center, while it only obtained Rs 1,662 million.

On the law and order front, Siddaramaiah claimed that the government failed because two people were shot and killed in Mangaluru during protests against the Citizenship Amendment Law / National Registry of Citizens.

Citing the involvement of Mr. Yediyurappa’s family in corruption, Mr. Siddaramaiah said there were charges against a certain Mr. Vijayendra who allegedly received a bribe from a contractor of the Bangalore Development Authority in the amount of millions of rupees. .

Vijayendra is an apparent reference to Yediyurappa’s son BY Vijayendra, who is vice president of state for BJP.

Responding to the accusation, Mr. Yediyurappa challenged Mr. Siddaramaiah to prove the charge.

“If there is a grain of truth that my family is involved, then I will withdraw from politics. If it is wrong, then you resign. You should be ashamed to make baseless accusations,” Yediyurappa said.

In the 225-member assembly, the ruling BJP has 116 members, Congress 67, JD (S) 33, BSP and 1 nominee, 2 independents and Spokesperson (has a casting vote).

Four seats: Sira, Basavakalyan, RR Nagar and Maski are vacant.
