Lawyer Babar Qadri was shot dead by suspected militants in the Hawal area of Srinagar on Thursday, the PTI news agency reported.

Unidentified gunmen shot Qadri at his Hawal residence at around 6.25 pm from point-blank range before fleeing the scene, a police officer said. Qadri was rushed to SKIMS hospital, where doctors declared him “dead upon arrival,” the official added.

Qadri, who was in her early 40s, frequently appeared as a panelist in televised debates.

The J&K People’s Democratic Party (PDP) and former Chief Minister Omar Abdullah have condemned the attack. “The feeling of tragedy is because he warned of the threat. Sadly, his warning was his last tweet, ”said Abdullah.

In his last tweet on September 21, Qadri had urged the police to file an FIR against a Shah Nazir who had accused him of working for agencies and had warned him to be “cautious” in television debates.

“I urge the administration of the State Police to register FIR against this Shah Nazir who has spread a wrong campaign in which I work for agencies. This false statement may represent a threat to my life, “had written Qadri in his last tweet.
