Babar Qadri, Kashmiri lawyer, shot dead in Srinagar by unidentified gunmen

Unidentified gunmen shot and killed Kashmiri lawyer Babar Qadri in the Hawal area of Srinagar on Thursday.

Qadri was rushed to the Sher-i-Kashmir Institute of Medical Sciences (SKIMS) hospital in Srinagar, where doctors pronounced him “dead on arrival,” the PTI news agency reported.

Qadri was recently suspended from the bar association. He called for his suspension to be revoked after the president of the bar association was released from his detention, which had been in effect since the repeal of article 370 in the territory of the union of Jammu and Kashmir.

However, the bar association did not accept his claim.

Qadri was frequently seen on television, participating in debates. He never hesitated to take on prominent people from Kashmir.

The former chief minister of Jammu and Kashmir, Omar Abdullah, condemned the murder of Qadri.

“The murder of Babar Qadri tonight is tragic and I condemn him unequivocally. The sense of tragedy is due to being warned of the threat. Sadly, his warning was his last tweet, ”Abdullah wrote on Twitter.

Just hours before his death, the lawyer, during a live Facebook, had said that he had been receiving intimidating messages.
