New Delhi:

The city may have already seen the last rain of the monsoon season and precipitation is unlikely now, the Met department said Thursday. In the absence of rain, the mercury is likely to rise a few notches in the coming days, he said. The capital has recorded just three days of rain this September, the lowest since 2016, when it witnessed just two days of rain.

The last time the Safdarjung Observatory, which provides representative data for the city, recorded rainfall was on September 8, said Kuldeep Srivastava, head of the regional forecast center at the Indian Meteorological Department.

The monsoon is likely to start withdrawing from Rajasthan on September 26. Thereafter, it will backtrack from Delhi, Haryana, west of Uttar Pradesh simultaneously in September last week, Srivastava said. The heat and humidity will continue to bother the inhabitants of the national capital.

On Wednesday, the maximum temperature was set at 36.5 degrees Celsius, three levels above normal. The national capital has registered 81% less rainfall in September so far, according to IMD data. The Safdarjung Observatory, which provides representative data for the city, has recorded 21mm of rain versus the normal 109mm this month so far. Delhi recorded 237mm of rainfall in August this year, the highest for the month in seven years.

Overall, the city has recorded 576mm of rain compared to the usual 633mm since June 1, when the monsoon season began, a deficiency of nine percent.
