A Delhi court on Thursday sent former JNU student Umar Khalid, arrested under UAPA charges in a case related to the northeast Delhi riots in February this year, in custody until October 22.

Khalid was brought before additional sessions judge Amitabh Rawat via video conference after his 10-day police custody expired.

His lawyer Trideep Pais asked the court to approve an order to provide security for Khalid inside the jail, as there was a threat that he could be attacked. Pais also asked the court to give an address to the jail authorities so that they would allow him to wear his glasses inside the jail.

Khalid also spoke directly to the ASJ, telling them that during his 10 days in police custody he did not sign any papers, he was reading a book that he wants to take in jail and that he wants to meet his parents before going to Tihar jail. .

Special prosecutor Amit Prasad told the court that since Khalid had to be examined by a doctor and other formalities had to be completed, his parents will need to arrive in time to visit him.

The court has allowed Khalid’s parents to meet him, provided they arrive on time.

According to the police, on March 6 an FIR was registered against Khalid based on information provided by an informant to Deputy Inspector Arvind Kumar of the narcotics unit of the Crimes Section. According to the FIR, Kumar said the informant told him that the riots in northeast Delhi in February were part of a “premeditated conspiracy” allegedly hatched by Khalid, a Dane and two others associated with different organizations.

That FIR says: “Khalid allegedly made provocative speeches in two different locations and called on citizens to take to the streets and block roads during the visit of the President of the United States, Donald Trump, to spread propaganda internationally. on what minorities are like in India. ” being persecuted. “

Meanwhile, the defendants’ disclosure statements in a Charge sheet submitted by Delhi Police Last week in the case of the riots, Congress leader Salman Khurshid, CPI-ML Politburo member Kavita Krishnan, student activist Kawalpreet Kaur, scientist Gauhar Raza and defender Prashant Bhushan were also appointed.
