The sudden resignation of Gupteshwar Pandey, Bihar’s Director General of Police (DGP) from his post, sparked rumors and speculation that he would join the political ranks in Bihar before the Assembly elections. His VRS application was approved by Governor Phagu Chauhan.

To further fuel speculation, a video of him appeared on Twitter showing him in his new avtaar. The song defines the former chief police officer of Bihar as ‘Janta ka Hero’ and ‘Robinhood Bihar Ke’.

Reports of his retirement and his big election crash look like deja vu from 2009, when Pandey voluntarily retired. He reportedly wanted to participate in Buxar’s 2009 general election on the Bharatiya Janata party’s ballot. The plan, however, did not see the light of day.

Pandey was recently embroiled in controversy and rose to fame during his involvement in the investigation into the death of actor Sushant Singh Rajput. He had made disparaging remarks against actress Rhea Chakraborty. Hours after the Supreme Court last month ordered an IWC investigation into the Rajput’s death, Pandey had said that Chakraborty did not have the “aukat” (stature) to comment on Bihar’s chief minister Nitish Kumar. He later apologized for his comment after an intense backlash.

He even welcomed the arrest of Rhea Chakraborty by the NCB in the drug case. “Now we are waiting for the shadow of the mystery about the tragic death of Sushant Singh Rajput to disappear,” he had said after Rhea’s arrest.

Meanwhile, Pandey maintained that he would not join any political party and as far as social work was concerned, he could do so without also entering politics. He was selected as Bihar DGP in February 2019 out of 12 IPS officers recommended by the state government to the Union Public Services Commission (UPSC).

“I have not joined any political party as of now and have not made any decisions about it yet. When it comes to social work, I can do it without also getting into politics, ”he said.

Pandey, who has been an officer in the Indian Police Service since 1987, has often made headlines. In December of last year, Pandey took on those who support criminals of his caste or religion, greet them with garlands and then blame the police for the crime.

The senior police officer has about seven lakh followers on Facebook, where he uploads videos of himself almost every day. Pandey is seen singing songs on Holi, eating dried flatbreads with salt and green chili peppers with the villagers, giving personality management tips to young people, and providing guidelines on how to combat the coronavirus.
