Mumbai police registered an FIR against filmmaker Anurag Kashyap after actor Payal Ghosh accused him of sexual misconduct in 2013, an official said Wednesday. Kashyap has dismissed the accusations as “unfounded”.
The First Information Report (FIR) was recorded at the Versova police station on Tuesday night after the actor
along with his attorney Nitin Satpute approached police, the official said.
The FIR was registered under Sections 376 (I) of the Indian Penal Code (rape), 354 (assault or use of criminal force on a woman with the intent to violate her modesty), 341 (undue restraint) and 342 (confinement improper), the official said, adding that more investigations are underway.
Kashyap will be questioned in connection with the alleged seven-year incident, he said.
In her police report, the actress alleged that Kashyap raped her at a location on Yari Road in Versova in 2013.
The actress and her lawyer approached the Oshiwara Police Station here on Monday, but were asked to go to the Versova Police Station as the alleged incident took place under their area of jurisdiction, the official said.
They had approached the Oshiwara police as Kashyap’s office is located in that area.
Satpute in a tweet on Tuesday night said: “Finally FIR has been brought against the accused for the crime of rape, undue restraint, unjust confinement and outrageous modesty of a woman.”
On Saturday, the actress took to Twitter, claiming that Kashyap was sexually inappropriate with her, an accusation the director called “unfounded.”
Kashyap called the actor’s claim an attempt to “silence him” for his outspoken opinions.
His lawyer earlier said in a tweet: “My client, Anurag Kashyap, has been deeply hurt by the false accusations, which are completely false, malicious and dishonest.”
