Toyota launches Urban Cruiser SUV in India: check price, features, variants


After months of tweeting teasers, Toyota finally revealed the Toyota Urban Cruiser, a new entrant in the subcompact SUV segment. The new Urban Cruiser is the second car after Glanza to be launched under Toyota’s agreement with Maruti Suzuki.

Pricing for the new subcompact SUV starts at 8.40 lakh (all ex-showroom prices) for the base variant and goes up to 11.30am for the top variant with full cover. Compared to the Maruti Suzuki Vitara Brezza, the new Cruiser has been launched at a slight premium. The Brezza starts in 7.34 lakh and go up to 11.15 lakh for the higher variant. Toyota Kirloskar Motor (TKM) will begin deliveries of the Urban Cruiser from mid-October.

In terms of variants, Toyota will offer a total of six options. The basic variant starts with Mid-Grade and goes up to Premium Grade AT. Here are the prices of the variants:

Medium grade MT (manual transmission): 8.40 lakh

Medium grade A (automatic): 9.80 lakh

High-grade MT: 9.15 lakh

High-grade AT: 10.65 lakh

Top quality MT: 9.80 lakh

Premium AT: 11.30 lakh

The Urban Cruiser is powered by a K-Series 1.5-liter four-cylinder petrol engine and will be available in manual and automatic transmission options in three variants: mid, high and premium. The Urban Cruiser comes with a lithium-ion battery in the automatic version. This battery will improve the fuel efficiency of the car and even provide assistance in generating torque.

The Urban Cruiser comes with safety features like dual front airbags, antilock braking system with electronic brake force distribution, hill hold control, and reverse parking camera with audio display.

Inside, it features a new 7-inch Smart Playcast touchscreen and for audio it has four door speakers and two tweeters. The Smart Playcast touch screen will support Android Auto / Apple Carplay and smartphone-based navigation. The car has two-tone dark brown interiors, engine start / stop button.

On the exterior, the Urban Cruiser will have a chrome 2-strip wedge cut grille and a striking trapezoidal fog area. The car will roll on 16-inch diamond-cut alloy wheels. The front fascia has dual-chamber LED headlights with dual-function DRL-cum LEDs. On the tailgate, the car will have split LED taillights.

The Toyota Urban Cruiser measures less than four meters and will compete against Vitara Brezza, Tata Nexon and Hyundai Venue. The latest entrant in the segment, Kia Sonet, will also compete in the same segment.
