Bihar Director General of Police (DGP) Gupteshwar Pandey resigned from his post on Tuesday after voluntarily withdrawing from services. His VRS application was approved by Governor Phagu Chauhan.

Pandey is likely to contest the upcoming state Assembly elections.

Sanjiv Kumar Singhal, Director General of Civil Defense and Fire Services, has received the additional position from DGP Bihar until further orders.

Pandey, who was involved in the investigation into the death of actor Sushant Singh Rajput, became embroiled in controversy following his sexist comment directed at Rhea Chakraborty. Hours after the Supreme Court last month ordered an IWC investigation into the Rajput’s death, Pandey had said that Chakraborty did not have the “aukat” (stature) to comment on Bihar’s chief minister Nitish Kumar.

Pandey had later apologized for the comment.

Earlier this month, Pandey had hailed the arrest of Chakraborty by the Narcotics Control Bureau (NCB) as a major victory for Bihar.

Pandey has been an officer in the Indian Police Service since 1987. He was selected as Bihar DGP in February last year from 12 IPS officers recommended by the state government to the Union Public Service Commission (UPSC).
