Tom Curran finished undefeated with 10 of nine deliveries© BCCI / IPL
The Indian Premier League (IPL) has never been short of drama, and it didn’t take long to develop during the current edition either. During the fourth match of the 2020 IPL between Rajasthan Royals (RR) and Chennai Super Kings (CSK), the match was marred by another arbitration controversy involving Tom Curran, MS Dhoni and Deepak Chahar. CSK won the raffle and chose to go bowling. With the Royals in full swing on their hitting display, Curran was horrified after the umpire handed him over trapped behind by a delivery from Deepak Chahar. He wanted a review, but the reviews assigned to his team were over. The umpires turned him in, only to call him after the television reruns. Dhoni’s wife, Sakshi, couldn’t believe the incident and decided to share her feelings in an Instagram story, which was later deleted.
On Instagram, he wrote: “The first time I see the third referee he is referred after the player has been handed over! Refereeing must be improved in such a prestigious tournament! Billions watching! @ Iplt20”. Later, she deleted the story.
Television replays showed that the ball had not even passed the bat and had come off the thigh. The ball also bounced off Dhoni before he caught it. After being awarded and going to the pavilion, Curran was called up again to resume hitting. He finished undefeated with 10 of nine deliveries.
The Royals were in their imperious prime, with some classy bats from Steve Smith and Sanju Samson. They finished their innings at 216/7 after 20 overs, setting a 217 run goal for CSK. Sam Curran was CSK’s top bowler, with three wickets.
