‘We let ourselves be influenced’: the Ministry of Health highlights the recoveries of Covid-19 while the Indian account exceeds 5.5 million

India crossed the 5.5 million mark on Tuesday in terms of the number of coronavirus disease cases. But the Union Health Ministry said the country’s active cases are less than a fifth of the total count.

At a press conference Tuesday afternoon, Health Secretary Rajesh Bhushan said that the number of Covid-19-related deaths in India per million people is among the lowest in the world. “It stands at 64 for India and 123 for the world,” Bhushan said.

He also said that daily Covid-19 recoveries are more than the number of new infections reported per day from the last four consecutive days.

“We are swayed by the narrative that India has more than 50 lakhs of cases, but we forget that almost 45 lakhs of people have already recovered,” said the health secretary.

“India has the highest number of recovered Covid-19 cases in the world: 44,97,867,” he added. The ministry had previously said that the country recorded more than 1 lakh of Covid-19 recoveries in the past 24 hours, the highest number of recoveries in a single day.

Government data says that the proportion of Covid-19 cases in India is 17.7 percent of global infections, while those that have recovered account for 19.5 percent of total recoveries in the world.

The fatal case rate (CFR) in the country is currently 1.59 percent.

According to the World Health Organization (WHO), RFC is a measure of the severity of a disease and is defined as the proportion of reported cases of a specific disease or condition that are fatal within a specified time.

With an increase of 75,083 new cases and 1,053 deaths in the past 24 hours, India’s Covid-19 count surpassed 55 lakh on Tuesday morning.
