New Delhi:
Days after his release from jail after a court overturned his detention under the strict National Security Law, Kafeel Khan met with Congress Secretary General Priyanka Gandhi Vadra on Monday.
Dr. Khan, a physician, was recently released from Mathura jail after the Allahabad High Court overturned his detention under the strict National Security Act (NSA).
During the meeting, it emerged that Dr. Khan thanked Priyanka Gandhi for the assistance and support provided by Congress during and after his arrest.
Dr. Khan’s wife and children also met Priyanka Gandhi Vadra.
The head of the Congress of Uttar Pradesh, Ajay Kumar Lallu, and the head of the party’s state minority cell, Shahnawaz Alam, were also present during the meeting.
Dr. Khan was suspended from BRD Medical College in Gorakhpur after several children died there in 2017, apparently due to a lack of oxygen cylinders at the government hospital.
A departmental investigation later cleared Khan of most of the charges, but he found himself in trouble for a supposedly provocative speech in Aligarh about the amended citizenship law.
He was detained under the strict NSA, which the Allahabad High Court earlier this month ruled was illegal.
After his release, Dr. Khan went to Rajasthan with his family.
“There is a congressional government in Rajasthan. My family felt that we will be safe … I wanted to spend some quality time with my family,” he had said.
After being released from prison, Priyanka Gandhi Vadra spoke by phone with Kafeel Khan and her family and promised all possible help.
In Uttar Pradesh, Congress had launched a campaign for the release of Dr. Khan and congressmen raised their voices for the release by signing signature drives, holding protests and writing letters.
