Bicycle killers shoot head of school in broad daylight in Gorakhpur


A school principal was shot and killed in broad daylight in Gorakhpur on Sunday and her teenage daughter was injured when two motorcycle assailants shot them, police said.

Forty-three-year-old Nivedita Major, principal of Ahirauli Elementary School in Kushinagar District, was taken dead to BRD Medical College while her daughter’s condition is critical.

Nivedita Major had left her home near Saint John’s Church in Gorakhpur town, Basaratpur, along with her 18-year-old daughter Delysia, on a scooter to her in-laws’ residence in Ram Janki Nagar in the afternoon.

Two unidentified people on a motorcycle passed their scooter and the passenger pulled out a pistol and fired at the mother and daughter.

The criminals fired indiscriminately at Nivedita and Delysia. Police said Nivedita was hit three times while her daughter received a single bullet in the chest. The two women fell to the road after being shot.

When the passerby rushed towards the scene, the criminals fired into the air to disperse them and escaped. Local people informed the police about the incident and the two women were taken to the BRD Medical College hospital where doctors pronounced Nivedita dead upon arrival. The Medical College administration said Delysia’s condition is critical. Eyewitnesses said the attackers were wearing helmets.

Senior police officers including Deputy Inspector General of Police (Gorakhpur Range), Rajesh Modak, SSP, Jogendra Kumar arrived at the scene with a forensic team and a squad of dogs.

The SSP said that the criminal branch has started an investigation into the murder of the school principal. Police teams have been formed to catch the killers. Police have detained some people, including a property dealer, for questioning, he said.
