More than 2,800 rescued after heavy rains caused flooding in Udupi


The Karnataka Disaster Management Authority reported that 1,107 houses were partially damaged, while 1,201 rescued people were housed in 31 aid camps opened on Sunday.

Udupi woke up to flooding and waterlogging in parts of the district on Sunday after the rains that began Saturday continued into the night. The flooding occurred in 77 villages in the district and prompted the state government to rush disaster response force personnel for rescue operations.

2,874 residents in the district were rescued by personnel from the National Disaster Response Force (NDRF) and the State Disaster Response Force (SDRF). Rescue operations were carried out in Udyavara, where the Papanashini River overflowed and flooded the low-lying areas, and Nittur in Udupi. Local youth, including fishermen, assisted disaster response personnel in rescue and relief operations.

The Neermarga-Katinja highway in Mangaluru collapsed on Sunday, cutting off connectivity to nearby areas. Train services on the Konkan line to Mysuru were affected after a landslide near Padil brought sections of mud onto the train tracks.

The Karnataka State Natural Disaster Monitoring Center (KSNDMC) issued a heavy rain alert for Malnad, the coastal regions and some inland and northern districts over the next few days.

The University of Mangaluru announced that the UG / PG degree exams scheduled for Monday were postponed due to the rains.

Train services on the Konkan line to Mysuru were affected after a landslide near Padil brought stretches of mud onto the train tracks.

State Interior Minister Basavaraj Bommai said on Sunday that he ordered the Udupi district authority to take relief measures immediately.

“I am aware of the floods in Udupi that inundated some villages. I have ordered the district authorities to bring a team of 250 members of the State Disaster Response Force (SDRF) there. The National Disaster Response Force (NDRF) ) will get there too, “he said in a statement.

The minister said he would speak to Finance Minister R Ashoka requesting an Air Force helicopter to assist in rescue efforts.

The latest rains come weeks after various parts of the state were hit by heavy downpours and relief work was still continuing. The state government declared 130 taluks in 23 flood-affected districts earlier this month.
