New Delhi:
Sudarshan News said today that it will file an affidavit later this week after the Supreme Court criticized it for its “Bindas Bol” program, which claimed a “major revelation about the conspiracy to infiltrate Muslims in government service.” The channel’s director, Suresh Chavhanke, had also coined the term “UPSC jihad“Short for the Union Public Service Commission, which conducts a highly competitive exam for high-level bureaucracy jobs.
The channel’s response came to a question from Judge DY Chandrachud, who asked what Sudarshan News plans to do “to defuse apprehensions” from the Supreme Court about the content that was deemed incendiary.
“We do not want to get in the way of journalism. We as a court know what happened during the Emergency. So we will ensure freedom of expression and ideas. We do not want to censor. We are not the censorship board.” I want your client to come to us and tell us how you want to mitigate our apprehensions, “said Judge Chandrachud.
“While we respect the freedom of the media, let us let this message reach the media as well that no community should become a target. Ultimately, we all exist as one nation, that it should be cohesive and not against no community, “said Judge Chandrachud. he said, referring to the show run by Chavhanke, whose website says he joined the BJP’s ideological mentor, Rashtriya Swayamsevak Sangh, as “bal swayamsevak“.
In a separate affidavit filed with the Supreme Court, Sudarshan TV has said that it has no ill will against any community or individual, and that the show concerns a matter of national interest.
However, the Supreme Court told the channel to clearly explain its position on content that was seen as slandering an entire community.
“The show shows a grave disrespect for this community. Everybody wants to be in the center of power. What it is doing is marginalizing those who should be brought into the mainstream. By doing this, it will lead them to blows wrong. Where are we going? ” Judge KM Joseph said.
“Besides Muslims, there are Jains. My law secretary underwent the course funded by Jain organizations. Christian organizations fund their candidates. Everyone wants to be part of the center of power. All communities want a piece of the pie of the power center. He has presented a cocktail of various factors, but deep down he is defaming an entire community, “Judge Joseph said.
The Supreme Court also criticized the Association of News Broadcasters or NBA as “toothless” for not doing enough to verify the incendiary content that is broadcast across the country. The NBA had said that it works only with its members and Sudarshan News was not its member.
“We also make the channels apologize at prime time. We are not useless. Various Supreme Court and Supreme Court rulings praise our regulations,” said the lawyer who appears in NBA.
“You watch tv?” Judge Chandrachud said.
“Yes,” replied the lawyer.
“Are you able to control it?” Judge Chandrachud said.
“It has improved significantly, but many (channels) are not our members,” said the lawyer.
The court then told the NBA to suggest how the association can be strengthened so that it has better regulatory capacity. “It has some members and that impedes its ability to regulate. You must tell us how it can be strengthened,” Judge Chandrachud said.
The matter will be known next Monday.
