New Delhi:

The government said Thursday that it incurred no expenses for the “Howdy-Modi” event in the US city of Houston in September last year and that it was organized by a non-profit group.

Prime Minister Narendra Modi received a thunderous reception when, accompanied by United States President Donald Trump, he addressed a crowd of more than 50,000 Indian-Americans at the event at a Houston stadium on September 22, 2019.

“A US-based non-profit organization, namely Texas India Forum Inc., hosted an event titled ‘Hello Modi! Shared Dreams, Bright Futures’ in Houston on September 22, 2019.” said the Minister of State for Foreign Affairs V Muraleedharan said in the Rajya Sabha.

I was answering a written question about the event.

When asked specifically whether the government incurred financial expenses for the event or funded its organizers, Muraleedharan said “no.”

He said the president of the Texas India Forum Inc. was Jugal Malani, a member of the indigenous community based in Texas.

“The prime minister, as part of his visit to the United States, participated in the event at the invitation of the organizers and addressed a meeting of members of the Indian-American community and many of their elected representatives,” the minister said.
