Union Minister Harsimrat Badal renounces centers new bills for farmers

Harsimrat Kaur Badal has resigned as Union Minister

New Delhi:

Shiromani Akali Dal Union Minister Harsimrat Kaur Badal resigned from Prime Minister Narendra Modi’s government hours before the vote in Lok Sabha on controversial agricultural sector bills opposed by the party.

Making the announcement today in parliament, her husband and party head Sukhbir Badal said that the Akalis will continue to support the government and the BJP but will oppose the “anti-peasant policy.”

The bills, which the BJP says are a major reform in the agricultural sector, have greatly upset farmers in Punjab and Haryana, who have been holding protests for weeks.

The Akalis, who initially supported the laws, have now realized the potential harm it could cause them in the state and called on the Center to pause on the issue until farmers’ concerns are addressed.

But as the BJP stood firm, the party decided to withdraw its support for the bills and vote against them in parliament today.
