Mumbai:
The Maharashtra State Human Rights Commission fined Cooper Hospital and city police for actor Rhea Chakraborty’s alleged visit to the hospital morgue where the body of actor Sushant Singh Rajput was found, an official said.
After reviewing reports submitted by city police and the hospital, he found that no “third parties” had entered the forbidden area of the morgue, the commission official said Wednesday.
On August 25, the commission issued a notice of apparent cause to the hospital and the police after some news channels claimed that Rhea Chakraborty, Sushant Rajput’s girlfriend, was allowed to enter the autopsy room at the morgue in violation of the rules.
“Both agencies, particularly the hospital, submitted detailed reports with documents and photographs. Strangers or third parties were not allowed into the autopsy room. These are prohibited areas,” the official said.
According to the dean of the hospital, Ms Chakraborty may have been present in the waiting room for visitors and relatives when Sushant Rajput’s body was brought in on June 15 for final rites after an autopsy, he said.
“The police had no role to play because once a body is delivered to the morgue (for autopsy), they are not in the picture,” he added.
“The police enter the scene after the autopsy when the body is handed over to them, and then they hand it over to relatives,” the official said, adding that Sushant Rajput’s body was handed over to his sister.
“Looking at all these aspects, the commission concluded that there was no breach (of the rules) by the dean or the police,” he said.
Sushant Singh Rajput, 34, was found dead in his apartment in the suburbs of Bandra on June 14.
Ms. Chakraborty, who is facing a CBI investigation for alleged complicity in his suicide, was subsequently arrested in a drug case related to the actor’s death.
