Tata Projects wins a new Parliament bill, L&T loses

New Delhi: Tata Projects Limited won the tender to build a new Parliament building, which will be built at a cost of Rs 861.90 crore, officials said on Wednesday. The company won the order over L&T Ltd, which submitted an offer of Rs 865 million.

The new Parliament building will be built close to the existing one under the Central Vista refurbishment project and is expected to be completed in 21 months.

According to the Central Department of Public Works (CPWD), the new building will be erected on parcel number 118 on the property of the House of Parliament.

The Central Vista redevelopment project provides for a common secretariat to house the 51 ministries in 10 buildings. The project has been justified as an income saving measure (Rs Rs 1000 crore according to CPWD) but it is more likely a measure to rid the executive and legislative institutions of India from their association with colonial rule.

The project proposes a new modern House of Parliament that can accommodate the 1,224 members of the Lok Sabha and the Rajya Sabha in case a joint session is necessary. There will be 10 administrative buildings that will house all the ministries. The current North and South blocks will be converted into museums.
