Over the past month, Covid-19 cases have increased about 34 percent in the city. In the same period, the number of sealed buildings in Mumbai has increased by as much as 53%. The maximum number of sealed buildings is in the Andheri-Borivali belt.
From August 14 to September 14, Covid cases in Mumbai increased from 1.27 lakh to 1.72 lakh, up 34 percent. In the same period, the number of sealed buildings has increased from 5,631 to 8,637, an increase of 53%.
During the past 30 days, BMC has sealed an average of 100 buildings each day. Civic officials said this is because most of the cases come from housing partnerships. Mumbai records more than 2,000 Covid cases a day.
Areas such as Borivali, Kandivali, Malad, Andheri, Vile Parle, Jogeshwari and Bhandup are the most affected. Authorities said these areas register around 100 cases every day. According to BMC data, central R (Borivali) has a maximum of 1,229 sealed buildings, followed by 850 in south R (Kandivali) and 650 in west K (Andheri, Jogeshwari).
“Cases are increasing in buildings and many new areas have emerged. We are taking all necessary measures to ensure that the virus does not spread, ”said Sanjay Kurhade, Deputy Municipal Commissioner, South R (Kandivali).
So far Mumbai has recorded more than 1.71 lakh of Covid cases with 8,178 deaths. The civic body has attributed the increase to increased testing and unlocking. Mumbai is currently running more than 11,000 tests per day.
“Initially, when the blockade was enforced, the people of the housing societies did not come forward, so the cases were low in the buildings. But after gradual relaxation, these people started going out to work and contracting the infection. This could be the reason for the increase in cases in the buildings, ”said Kishor Gandhi, Assistant Municipal Commissioner, T ward (Mulund).
According to BMC data, 9.6 lakh people live in sealed buildings. There are 564 containment zones throughout the city. The number is down slightly from last month.
