SitapurA minor was allegedly gang-raped by a group of 5 men in Uttar Pradesh, police said Monday. The incident took place on 7 September in the Imalia Sultanpur district of Uttar Pradesh as the minor was returning home from a market.
Apparently, the defendant filmed the entire incident and uploaded the video to social media. The incident came to light when video of the incident went viral.
In September, the minor was on her way home from a market when two young men, identified as Sheebu and Nazim, dragged her to a cane field. Three other people were also present on the ground.
Accused threatened survivor
The five men allegedly gang-raped the minor and recorded a video of the obscene act. The Press Trust of India reported. The defendant allegedly threatened the survivor with dire consequences and asked her not to speak of the incident.
A case was registered against the five men after the girl recounted her ordeal. Police jumped into action after they were briefed on the incident and arrested one of the defendants, Sheebu, on Monday.
Sitapur SP RP Singh and additional SP (south) Rajiv Dixit visited the village after there were riots over gang rape. Police force was also deployed in the area to prevent violence. Police said the other defendants are being located. More research is underway.
This is not the first rape case to emerge in Uttar Pradesh. In August this year, a 15-year-old girl was allegedly sedated, gang-raped and forced into prostitution in the Ramnagar area of Varanasi. The minor managed to escape from her captor and approached the police, after which a case was registered.
