Prime Minister Narendra Modi today highlighted Bihar’s role in the country’s parliamentary spirit, remembering former greats such as Jayaprakash Narayan and Karpuri Thakur and saluting Rajya Sabha member Harivansh Singh, who was elected Vice Speaker of the Upper House today.
“Harivansh Ji is a bearer of the torch of democracy, hailing from Bihar, a land known for its democratic spirit. Bihar is the land of JP and Karpuri Thakur and the land of Champaran of Bapu … We all know that Harivansh Ji comes from from Jai Prakash Ji’s town of Sitabdiara, “Prime Minister Modi said in his speech in the upper house as the monsoon session of parliament began today.
Bihar, he said, has been “the land of India’s democratic system, I believe Harivansh Ji will carry this legacy forward,” he added.
Harivansh Singh, PM Modi said, he said, he is an “outstanding referee who belongs on all sides of the aisle.”
“He has conducted the proceedings impartially. He has been an exceptional arbitrator and will continue to be so for times to come. He has always been diligent in the performance of his duties,” Prime Minister Modi said.
“The respect I have for Harivansh ji is shared by every member of the House. He has earned this respect. His impartial role in Parliament strengthens our democracy,” the Prime Minister added.
