Coronavirus cases in India: Since the beginning of this month, Tamil Nadu has reported more recoveries every day that new infections of the new coronavirus. While this is not the first time something like this has happened in the state, this is by far the longest period of time that this trend has continued.

The result has been that the number of active cases in the state has dropped to less than 50,000 for the first time since mid-July, when it first crossed that number. On the way, Pune, the city with the maximum number of infected people, alone has more than 75,000 active cases.

Except four times, the daily increase in the state has been limited to between 5,500 and 6,000 since Aug. 1.

As of late August, Tamil Nadu had the second highest number of infected people in the country, after Maharashtra, before being overtaken by Andhra Pradesh. For a month and a half, Tamil Nadu has shown unusual consistency in the number of new daily cases it has been reporting. Except four times, the daily increase in the state has been limited to between 5,500 and 6,000 since August 1. In fact, in more than two-thirds of the days in this period, daily new infections were between 5,800 and 6,000. Generally, this kind of uniformity in numbers is not expected over such a long period.

Recoveries outpacing new infections is a good sign because, if it continues for a long period of time, it could be a sign of the onset of disease decline. However, as we have seen in the case of Delhi, this is not a protection against the emergence of a new wave of infections that could completely undermine all the gains made. Still, while it lasts, this trend does translate into a reduction in active cases, reducing burdens on hospitals and healthcare workers.
