After a short hiatus, the city is likely to experience heavy rain next week, with the Indian Meteorological Department (IMD) forecasting an intense spell on September 15 across the Pune district.
Low pressure is likely to form off Andhra Pradesh in the Bay of Bengal on September 13. As this system moves westward, the southwest monsoon will become vigorous on September 14 over Maharashtra. As a result, heavy rains are expected in most of the state, including the Pune district, during September 14-16, ”said Anupam Kashyapi, Head of the Department of Meteorology, IMD, Pune.
Additionally, an offshore canal located in the Arabian Sea off the coast of Maharashtra will also add to favorable weather conditions for a resurgent monsoon in the state, authorities said.
Raigad, Mumbai and Palghar in the Konkan region are likely to see heavy rains on Sunday. In Madhya Maharashtra, the rain will increase from Monday and become more intense on September 15 in the Pune district, especially in the ghat areas. With the system moving westward, most Vidarbha districts will also experience increased rainfall activity over the next four days.
Rainfall throughout the past week over the city was associated with convective activities and thunder resulting from the heating conditions experienced during the day. Heavy rains of around 100mm were recorded in many places in Konkan, while Pune recorded rains of 40 to 50mm between September 11 and 12, according to IMD data.
This season, the city of Pune recorded 722mm of rain, 46% more than normal. Most of the rains came in August.
Similarly, as of September 12, the state’s recorded rainfall was 13 percent in surplus, with Konkan (23 percent) and Madhya Maharashtra (30 percent) leading with ‘excess’ rainfall in the general season. . Marathwada (13 percent) and Vidarbha (- 16 percent) remain in the category of “normal” precipitation.
The southwest monsoon season will soon enter the withdrawal phase, which is expected only for the third week of this month.
