Chennai:
Four students, who had to appear for the highly competitive NEET (National Cum Entry Eligibility Test), died by suicide this week in Tamil Nadu. The entrance exam for medical courses is being held today across the country amid an increase in coronavirus cases.
Two students, Aditya and Jothisri, were found dead yesterday. Twenty-year-old Motilal, the son of a merchant from the town of Tiruchengode in Tamil Nadu, failed to pass the entrance exam last year; was going to reappear today.
Aditya, the son of a Dharmapuri scrap dealer, was also unable to eliminate the NEET last year. Yesterday he was found dead in his home.
A 19-year-old woman from Madurai who was on the waiting list after appearing for NEET last year and Vignesh, the son of a farmer in Ariyalur, who couldn’t afford a private college last year, also died by suicide, he said. police. .
The state had previously urged the center to exempt Tamil Nadu from NEET due to the coronavirus crisis and allow it to offer medical admission based on Class XII qualifications.
Going one step further, PMK founder S Ramadoss demanded on Wednesday that NEET be permanently canceled. “The abolition of NEET is the only solution,” he said Wednesday.
DMK chief MK Stalin is another fierce critic of stopping NEETs amid the COVID-19 pandemic. He’s been asking the center to postpone it. “NEET destabilizes the students,” Stalin said earlier this week.
Deputy Chief Minister O Panneerselvam expressed regret. “Students must learn to face any situation with guts and parents must help them in this,” AIADMK’s Panneerselvam said Saturday.
On Wednesday, the Supreme Court refused to admit petitions seeking to postpone or cancel NEET. A bank headed by Judge Ashok Bhushan said authorities will take all possible steps to carry out NEETs safely amid the pandemic.
For nearly a decade, Tamil Nadu had abolished the medical entrance exam, saying that it creates stress among students and that poor students cannot afford private training.
Students were admitted to medical schools on the basis of Class 12 grades.
During the UPA rule, the state had achieved presidential consent exempting the state from NEET. However, the BJP government rejected the exemption.
