Congress President Sonia Gandhi will not attend the first part of the monsoon session of parliament, starting Monday, as she left the national capital today for her annual check-up abroad. While Ms Gandhi will be out of the country for at least two weeks, her son, Congressman Rahul Gandhi, who is accompanying her, is expected to return after a few days, when Priyanka Gandhi Vadra joins them to help her.

Ms Gandhi has held meetings with her parliamentary strategy group and has given clear guidelines for better coordination in both Houses and to raise key issues that are affecting the nation.

The party is likely to raise issues such as the economic slowdown and the Center’s handling of the coronavirus pandemic in parliament.

One day before her departure, Ms Gandhi made key organizational changes in which several “dissident” letter writers, who were considered to have questioned the Gandhi leadership last month, lost their posts.

The most notable of the leaders ousted from the position of general secretary of the party is Ghulam Nabi Azad, the de facto leader of a group of 23 high-ranking party men, who had written to Ms Gandhi seeking radical changes in the organizational structure. of the party.

The group had spoken about the “collective leadership” of the party in the letter, which was seen as an attack on the Gandhis.

Motilal Vora, Ambika Soni and Mallikarjun Kharge were also removed as general secretaries of the All India Congressional Committee (AICC) in Friday’s deck by Ms Gandhi.

Parliament meets again on September 14 amid a rapid rise in coronavirus cases across the country.
