The Kolkata Knight Riders have joined Ali Khan from the USA as a replacement for closure Harry Gurney. Khan, 29, will be the first US player to participate in the IPL. He is replacing Gurney, who withdrew from the IPL season and England’s Vitality Blast last month due to a shoulder injury.
The Dinesh Karthik-led KKR will now have fast pitcher Khan among Eoin Morgan, Pat Cummins, Rahul Tripathi, Varun Chakravarthy, M Siddharth, Chris Green, Tom Banton and Nikhil Naik as the new inclusions on the side.
The fast bowler has been a part of the winners of the CPL 2020 Trinbago Knight Riders, a sister franchise to IPL’s KKR. The lanky bowler has been among the best players in the newly concluded league. He bagged eight lots with an economy rate of 7.43.
Known for his 140km / h speed and perfect yorkers during heavy duty work, Khan burst onto the T20 league scene in 2018 when he was picked up by Dwayne Bravo at Global T20 Canada. The former Trinbago captain took him to CPL where Khan managed to get 16 wickets in the 12 games he played. Eventually, Khan played for the Bangladesh Premier League and the Pakistani Super League as well.
Bravo, in one of his Instagram stories, posted a video with Khan, Brendon McCullum and a few more inside a plane with the caption ‘Next stop in Dubai’.
Former Rajasthan Royals bowler Rusty Theron, who now plays for the US, was part of the now-defunct Deccan Chargers team in 2011 and Kings XI Punjab in 2010. But Theron, who was part of the Royals in 2015 , moved to the US from South Africa in 2019.
