Serena Williams was defeated 1-6, 6-3, 6-3 in the US Open semifinals by Victoria Azarenka on Thursday, denying him a chance to win a record-equaling 24th Grand Slam singles title this year at home.
Belarusian Azarenka will play against Japan Naomi osaka in his third final at Flushing Meadows on Saturday, having lost the previous two to Williams in 2012 and 2013.
Williams, a six-time US Open champion, came out firing at the winners from all sides of the Arthur Ashe Stadium court and finished the first set in just over half an hour.
Azarenka, who played her first Grand Slam semi-final in seven years, improved her game in the second verse and prevailed after some explosive exchanges of power shots.
The two-time Australian Open champion kept the pressure on in the third as the 38-year-old Williams battled a left ankle injury and sealed her spot in the final with an ace.
