A medical student who lost her husband two days ago jumped from the third floor of a shopping mall in the Madhya Pradesh city of Indore on Friday morning. She survived the suicide attempt, but has suffered serious injuries, police said. The couple had been married for almost fifteen days.
Her husband, Subham Khandelwal, a contractor in the Ujjain district about 50 kilometers away, had committed suicide on Wednesday, leaving a note blaming two engineers from the local municipal corporation for his death.
Sania Khandelwal, who is in her early 20s and studying medicine at a private university in Ujjain, is hospitalized at the MY Hospital in Indore. She has suffered head and leg injuries and is under observation by doctors in an intensive care unit (ICU), police said.
Sania had come to Indore with her father, who had come to take her home in Faridabad of Haryana after learning of the death of her son-in-law. She was going to accompany her father to Faridabad, on the outskirts of the national capital, Delhi. They were staying at a hotel in the Sarvate bus stop area of Indore and were scheduled to catch a flight on Friday afternoon.
Early Friday, Sania left the hotel and told her father that she was going to get some fruit juice. But she reached the shopping center in Vijay Nagar about 5-6 kilometers away and jumped from the third floor, a police office said.
Some employees at the mall rushed her to a nearby hospital, from where they referred her to MY hospital.
Police said they found a note saying that she wanted to be with her husband.
“Prima facie, it is a suicide attempt case. The woman has been hospitalized. We are investigating the matter, ”said Indore City Police Superintendent Rakesh Gupta.
Sania’s suicide attempt in Indore on Friday morning highlighted the circumstances that led to her husband’s death.
Within hours, Ujjain police registered a case against two junior engineers from Ujjain Nagar Nigam, Naresh Jain and Sanjay Khujeni, and another person named Chinnu, for instigation of suicide, police said.
Subham Khandelwal had been found injured in his car which had suffered an accident near the town of Nalwa in Ujjain on Wednesday night. He died. The police initially treated his death as a suicide case, but later found a note saying that he was committing suicide due to the harassment of the three people. Police said he had consumed a poisonous substance.
Police said they were still investigating the death of the 32-year-old contractor.
Rupesh Dwivedi, the additional superintendent of police, Ujjain, said that Shubham Khandelwal “prima facie had committed suicide”.
