Mumbai police arrested four Shiv Sena workers late Friday for assaulting a retired Indian Navy officer. Madan Sharma, 65, was allegedly beaten by Seine workers for forwarding a cartoon of Prime Minister Uddhav Thackeray on WhatsApp, police said.

The incident took place around 11:30 am in the area of ​​the Lokhandwala Complex in the suburbs of Kandivali.


One of the detainees has been identified as Kamlesh Kadam, a Sena shakhapramukhalong with three party workers, while two others are on the run.

“Retired Navy officer Madan Sharma had posted a cartoon about Thackeray on a WhatsApp group. Some Sena workers went to his home and beat him. Sharma suffered an eye injury and is being treated at the hospital,” he said An official.

A case was filed against the defendant under Section 325 of the IPC (causing serious harm) and riot-related provisions.

Former Maharashtra Prime Minister Devendra Fadnavis criticized the Thackeray government for reports of the assault. “Extremely sad and shocking incident. Retired naval officer was beaten by thugs just by WhatsApp forwarding. Please stop this GundaRaj Hon Uddhav Thackeray ji. We demand strong action and punishment of these thugs,” he said on Twitter.
