NEW DELHI: Leader of Congress Rahul gandhi on Friday said range cannot determine the provision of nutrition in the armed forces and asked for a reconsideration of the related rules.
Participate in a meeting of the Parliamentary Standing Committee on Defense, which was convened to discuss the issue of “Provision and monitoring of the quality of ration and livery items to the defense forces, especially in the border areas,” said that providing less nutrition to the Jawans is “unfair and discriminatory “and should be reconsidered.
Rahul Gandhi pitched the Jawans, saying they should get more nutrition as they are standing on the borders and defending the country.
It emerged that the former head of Congress told the committee that the nutritional value of the jaws should be equal to that of the officers.
There can be no differentiation in nutrition provision based on ranks, he told the panel, adding that ranks may be a determining factor in setting salary, but not nutritional value, the sources said.
Officials told Rahul Gandhi that military officers get different food than what is served to the jaws.
Defense Ministry officials clarified that there is no difference in the quality and quantity of the items served, except that the officers are served items different from those served to the jaws.
The Parliamentary Standing Committee for Defense is chaired by the leader of the Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) and former Union Minister Jual Oram. Members who attended the meeting on Friday included the head of the Nationalist Congress Party (NCP), Sharad Pawar.
