Kolkata: A car accident claimed the lives of the first female officer in charge of the Kolkata police, Debashree Chatterjee, and two other officers, her driver and her official guard. Chatterjee was currently stationed as CO 12th Battalion.
The vehicle in which armed battalion commander Deboshree Chatterjee, her bodyguard Tapas Burman and driver Manoj Saha were traveling collided with a stationary truck loaded with sand on National Highway 2 on Friday morning.
Confirming the news, a senior West Bengal Police official said: “Debashree Chatterjee, CO 12th Battalion encountered an accident on its way to Kolkata on the Durgapur Highway in Hodla under the boundaries of Daddur PS in the Hooghly district of West Bengal When the three were rushed to IB Sadar Hospital after the accident, the treating doctor declared them all dead. “
According to eyewitnesses, the driver of the official vehicle was allegedly speeding when he collided with the truck. Hooghly District Police officials said the driver may have lost control after falling asleep at the wheel, according to a PTI report.
During her 32-year service, Chatterjee headed the Cyber Cell and the Women’s Complaint Cell at the Kolkata Police Detective Department and was commended for her work.
She was the first female officer in charge assigned in the Kolkata Police. She took over as the officer in charge of the North Port Police Station in 2010.
Meanwhile, senior officials, DIG Traffic, West Bengal and SP from the Hooghly district, rushed to the scene to investigate the cause of the accident. Today an autopsy will be carried out on all three bodies.
