Covid-19 positive inmates escape from Pune temporary jail


Two inmates from a Pune temporary jail, believed to be Covid-19 positive, escaped the facility in the early hours of Thursday. One of them is a defendant in an attempted murder case.

The two were identified as Anil Vitthal Vetal, a resident of Ganesh Nagar in Bhima Koregaon, Shirur and Vishal Ramdhan Kharat, a resident of the Nigdi area of ​​Pune. They escaped from the prison around 1 a.m.

As of midnight Wednesday, the Yerawada Jail temporary facility had 251-Covid-19 positive patients, housed in a building converted into a Covid care facility.

While Kharat was in judicial custody in an attempted murder case recorded in Shirur, Vetal was in judicial custody in an assault and robbery case recorded in Pimpri Chinchwad, according to police.

The two were housed in a room on the first floor of a building on the Yerawada campus, where the facility is located.

“They were in a room in the Covid care facility for the temporary prison. They cut the bars of the window grill. Inmates who test positive are treated there in the central jail and in the temporary facility. There were a total of 20 patients in that room, ”said Police (Crime) Inspector Ajay Waghmare from the Yerawada Police Station.

One case in this regard was registered at the Yerawada Police Station.

Also earlier, five inmates had escaped the facility by slashing the window bars.
