NEW DELHI: Congressional Leader Rahul Gandhi said on Wednesday that instead of eliminating the coronavirus in 21 days as Prime Minister Modi had promised, the lockdown served as a “death sentence” for India’s unorganized sector and the poor.
“The blockade was not an attack on the coronavirus. The closure was an attack on the poor of India. It was an attack on the future of our youth, ”Gandhi said in part four of his video series on the economy and the impact of the shutdown.
“The closure was an attack on workers, farmers and small businesses. It was an attack on our disorganized sector. We have to understand this. We all have to face this attack. Whatever was done in the name of Corona was the third attack on the disorganized sector, ”Rahul added. In previous videos, the congressman had blamed demonetization and a poorly implemented GST for breaking the backs of the poor, the unorganized sector, and small businesses.
Rahul said the sudden blockade was a “death sentence” for the unorganized class. “The promise was to finish the crown in 21 days, but instead millions of jobs and small industries were finished,” he said, referring to the shutdown as PM Modi’s “anti-people disaster plan.”
Rahul also said that when it came time to open up, the BJP government did not heed Congressional advice to help the poor through a scheme like NYAY, depositing money directly into bank accounts. “We suggest that for small and medium-sized businesses, you need to prepare a package. They need to be saved. Without this money, they will not be able to survive, but the government did nothing ”. he said.
