Bollywood actress Rhea Chakraborty was arrested by the Office of Narcotics Control on Tuesday under various sections of the Narcotics and Psychotropic Substances Act of 1985.

For three consecutive days, actress Rhea Chakraborty has appeared before the Narcotics Control Bureau (NCB) in connection with the ongoing investigation into a possible drug connection in the death of Sushant Singh Rajput. Chakraborty was arrested after three days of questioning. The arrest appeared to highlight the blatant sexism and misogyny of Indian men and women.

While the past few days have seen a new low for various media channels as well as the paparazzi, social media has not been far behind in adding fuel to what many are now calling the Chakraborty witch hunt. Even when the media broke down Chakraborty’s personal life, personal conversations, and alleged drug habits in the name of seeking ‘justice for Sushant’, social media users on platforms like Twitter were busy doing the same.

After his arrest, trolls and alleged seekers of justice for Rajputs found a tweet posted by Chakraborty as early as 2009. The cryptic post read, “just came out of a strange and fascinating story of an Indian girl … who served 4 half a year in jail for drug trafficking “.

The old disconnected tweet invited a new trolling group from Chakraborty, who has already spent days surrounded by a media frenzy with so-called SSR fans clamoring for his arrest at any moment.

Responding to the tweet, many felt that he was clairvoyant. “I didn’t know you were an astrologer Rhea,” wrote one Twitter user. While another asked, “was the girl you?”

The tweet, which had barely a few hundred likes and even fewer initially shared, erupted after her arrest and is now being shared by thousands via a barb, not just to Chakraborty but to everyone who supported her.

Other actresses and celebrities like Swara Bhasker, Shibani Dandekar and others who supported Chakraborty were also tagged in the post and defamed.

While the incident reveals the rude and youthful minds of the majority of adult Indian voters, it also reveals an unsettling and fierce hatred for Chakraborty that has nothing to do with his drug use or Rajput relationship. It just stinks of sexism.

Everyone who shares the tweet to mock Chakraborty should know that drug trafficking and drug use are not the same. And arrests don’t make people guilty, court sentences do.
