A 45-year-old taxi driver was killed, allegedly by two men who boarded his vehicle, Sunday night. The family of Aftab Alam, a resident of Trilokpuri in Noida, alleged that the killers forced him to sing Jai Shri Ram before his death.
The Wire reported that Aftab’s 20-year-old son, Mohammad Sabir, received a call from his father minutes before his death in which the defendant can be heard asking Aftab to sing “Jai Shri Ram.” Sabir said he started recording the call as soon as he felt his father was in danger.
In the audio, the accused can be heard laughing and saying “Bol Jai Shri Ram …” and then “Bhai tu Jai Shri Ram bol” a few seconds later. The victim’s response is not audible.
“My father had dropped off one of his old clients in Bulandshahr around 3pm yesterday. Made the descent around 7pm and went home. On the way he called me and told me to reload his Fast Tag. I did that around 7:30 pm and after a while I got a call again, I think this was near a toll booth. He had probably felt that some men he had come across were not the right kind of people, so he called me and possibly put his mobile phone in his pocket, ”Sabir said according to the report.
The next day, the police found Aftab’s body tied to the side of his own taxi.
The police said prima facie, it appears that the defendants were drunk and got into the taxi to rob it. A case under section 302 (murder) has been filed at the Badalpur Police Station.
