BENGALURU: A Russian research company has started the production of spacesuits for Indian astronauts as part of Gaganyaan mission, Glavkosmos, a subsidiary of Russia’s Roscosmos space corporation, said Monday.
“Research, development and production company Zvezda under Glavkosmos contract with Human Space Flight Center of Indian Space Research Organization (ISRO) has started manufacturing personal flight equipment for Indian cosmonauts in training RussiaGlavkosmos said.
On September 3, the elected Indian astronaut in training for a space flight in Russia visited Zvezda. “Their anthropometric parameters were measured for the subsequent production of spacesuits. The contract also provides for the production of custom-made individual seats and sofa coverings, ”said Dmitry Loskutov, CEO of Glavkosmos in a statement shared with TOI.
Glavkosmos and the Human Spaceflight Center signed the contract for the production and delivery of individual equipment kits for Indian astronauts on March 11, 2020. Four elected astronauts from India have been training in Russia since February 10, 2020.
Last month, the TOI reported that elected astronauts completed training on crew actions in the event that an abnormal descent module landed in three different scenarios. First, they completed training for such a landing in forested and swampy areas in winter in February 2020, on the water surface in June 2020, and in the steppe in summer at the end of last month (July 2020).
“… In June 2020, all India’s elected astronauts underwent training in short-term weightlessness mode aboard the IL-76MDK special laboratory aircraft, and in July, they were trained to board a helicopter while evacuating from the landing module landing point. ”
