Uttarakhand BJP MLA accused of rape, says part of conspiracy to defame him

Mahesh Negi said he is gathering evidence against the woman that he will present to the police.

Dehradun:

Dwarahat’s BJP MLA, Mahesh Negi, was charged with rape and criminal intimidation weeks after a woman accused him of the crime in a police report, police said.

An FIR against Mahesh Negi was registered at the Nehru Colony Police Station on Sunday under sections 376 (rape) and 506 (criminal intimidation) of the IPC in compliance with orders from a local court, Dehradun (City) Police Superintendent , Shweta Choubey said.

The legislator’s wife, Rita Negi, has also been charged with criminal intimidation, he said.

However, the MLA described the accusations against him as part of a conspiracy to smear him, saying some congressional leaders also participated in it. He also expressed his willingness to face any investigation and accused the woman of incriminating others in bogus cases in the past.

He said he is gathering evidence against the woman he will present to the police.

The woman had filed a police report on August 16 accusing the MLA of raping her and fathering her daughter. She also demanded that a DNA test be performed if law enforcement agencies doubted the veracity of her charge.

An FIR was filed against the woman last month based on a complaint by the legislator’s wife that she was being blackmailed by the woman because she had refused to pay her 5 million rupees that she was trying to extort from him.
