India overtook Brazil on Monday to become the second most affected country in the world by the coronavirus pandemic, registering more than 90,000 Covid-19 cases per second day, bringing the total count to more than 42 lakh. The surge in numbers comes on a day when metro services were restarted in several cities including Delhi and Bengaluru. Measures such as social distancing, the use of masks and the provision of disinfectants have been ensured to prevent the spread of the pandemic, which according to several experts is in the second wave in various parts of the country.

According to the Ministry of Health, five states contribute 60% of the total cases, with Maharashtra at the top with 21.6% of cases, followed by Andhra Pradesh with 11.8%, Tamil Nadu with 11 %, Karnataka with 9.5% and Uttar. In the past 24 hours, Andhra Pradesh posted the highest recoveries with 11,915. Karnataka and Maharashtra recorded 9,575 and 7,826 recoveries, respectively. Tamil Nadu witnessed the recovery of 5,820 people from the disease and 4,779 recoveries from Uttar Pradesh during the same period, it said. “These five states together contributed 57 percent of the recoveries in the last 24 hours,” the Health Ministry said.

He said that several calibrated and focused actions undertaken within the overall ‘test, follow-up and treat’ strategy have enabled early case identification through aggressive and large-scale testing. “Improved ambulance services and seamless end-to-end patient management to facilitate their timely hospitalization before their health deteriorates has led to large numbers of COVID-19 patients recovering and being discharged from the hospitals, “the ministry said.

Additionally, he said supervised isolation in home and facility settings, following an effective care protocol standard, has greatly assisted in the recovery of mild and moderate cases. India’s COVID-19 case count surpassed 42 lakh on Monday with a record 90,802 people infected in one day, according to data from the Union Ministry of Health.

The total number of coronavirus cases rose to 42.04,613, while the death toll rose to 71,642 with 1,016 deaths reported in 24 hours, updated data showed at 8 a.m.
