Former Odia film actor Varsha Priyadarshini filed a lawsuit against her husband, actor-turned-deputy, Anubhav Mohanty, accusing him of physical and mental torture. Mohanty is the whip deputy chief of Biju Janta Dal in the Lok Sabha and a national spokesperson for the party.

Priyadarshini has filed a petition with the Cuttack Subdivisional Magistrate Court under section 12 of the Protection of Women Against Domestic Violence Act and has alleged that her husband used to beat and abuse her after getting drunk. She has also accused Mohanty and her family of not allowing her to act in films.

The couple have worked together on several Odia films even after their 2014 marriage. Priyadarshini, recounting the recent events, has alleged: “After returning from Delhi, my husband became violent and yelled at me. On June 7, my husband and his father reprimanded me in obscene language for two hours. On June 11, my husband asked me to accept a mutual divorce and threatened me with terrible consequences if I did not agree. He has also accused him of being a womanizer.

She has urged the court to order Mohanty to pay compensation for the loss of her income, medical expenses, rent money and monthly support totaling 15 million rupees. The case hearing is scheduled for Monday. Priyadarshini has also filed a separate petition under Article 6 of the Hindu Marriage Law for the restitution of conjugal rights.

Mohanty, however, has denied receiving legal notice in this regard. “I have not received any notice in this regard, so I cannot comment,” Mohanty said.
