Wife accuses BJD deputy of physical and mental torture and takes him to court

The actor-turned-deputy and deputy general manager of Biju Janata Dal in Lok Sabha Anubhav Mohanty got into trouble after his wife Varsha Priyadarshini, a former Odia film actor, accused him of physical and mental torture.

In her petition filed in Cuttack Subdivisional Judicial Magistrate court under section 12 of the Protection of Women from Domestic Violence Act, Priyadarshini alleged that her husband, MP, used to beat her after getting drunk.

Accusing the deputy of being a drunk and members of her family humiliating her, she made accusations of being treated like “an insect”.

Mohanty and Priyadarshini, both major players in Odia’s film industry, married in 2014. The duo had acted in several films together.

“He is a drunk and a womanizer. Uses vulgar language after getting drunk. After the last general elections of 2019, the torture by Mohanty and his relatives increased day by day, beyond the level of tolerance, ”he alleged.

Furthermore, she alleged that for two months during the confinement, she was left alone at her father-in-law’s house in Cuttack and the MP did not take her to Delhi despite her pleas. “After coming back from Delhi, my husband got violent and yelled at me. On June 7, my husband and his father reprimanded me in obscene language for 2 hours. On June 11, my husband asked me to accept a mutual divorce and threatened me with dire consequences if I did not agree, ”Priyadarshini alleged in her petition.

In his petition, he has demanded from Mohanty Rs 15 million compensation for the loss of her earnings as an actress, as well as medical expenses and a monthly alimony of Rs 70,000 for the rent and maintenance of the house.

The case will go to a hearing in SDJM court on Monday.

Priyadarshini has also filed a separate petition for the restoration of conjugal rights under section 6 of the Hindu Marriage Act in a Cuttack family court.

However, Mohanty, who was on a tour of his Kendrapada constituency today, denied receiving legal notice on the matter.

“I have not yet received any legal notice about it. I’ll let you know when I get it, ”said Mohanty, who is also one of the BJD’s national spokespersons.
